The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival

The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is an important traditional Chinese holiday celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar. The festival has a history of over 2,000 years and is named after the Chinese mythical creature, the dragon.

The festival’s origin can be traced back to the commemoration of the poet and statesman Qu Yuan, who lived during the Warring States period in ancient China. Qu Yuan was a loyal minister who tried to warn his king of a potential invasion, but his advice was ignored. Frustrated and disappointed, Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Miluo River. The local people admired him and threw zongzi, sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves, into the river to keep fish and evil spirits away from his body.

The Dragon Boat Festival is not only a tribute to Qu Yuan but also a time for ancient dragon worship. Dragon boat races, where teams paddle in long, narrow boats decorated like dragons, are a key part of the celebrations. These races symbolize the search for Qu Yuan’s body in the river and are believed to bring good luck and ward off evil spirits.

Aside from dragon boat races and the consumption of zongzi, the festival is also associated with various customs and activities, such as wearing colorful silk threads to ward off evil spirits, hanging up sachets of herbs to protect against diseases, and standing eggs upright to bring good luck.
